New Podcast from the NY Alliance

Medicaid is the joint federal and state program that provides health insurance and long-term care to millions of people all across the country. In New York, over 7 million people are enrolled in the program. First enacted in 1965, Medicaid evolved over the years to become a significant and necessary source of coverage for certain populations. It’s essential for the health and well-being of many people with disabilities because it allows them to live full, healthy lives in their communities.

The New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation has launched a podcast that takes a look at how Medicaid works, how the program is financed, and why it’s a lifeline to so many people including New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We’re calling the podcast “Inside Medicaid” and Courtney Burke of Sachs Policy Group will host each episode.

Listen in as we explore New York’s Medicaid program as it relates to people with disabilities, how the system works, the different Medicaid waivers, what’s changing in public policy and what it all means for people, providers, families and communities.

Episode 2: Why Home and Community Based Services Are Important

Home and Community Based Services or HCBS are Medicaid programs designed to allow people to live independently in their homes and communities rather than in institutional settings.  HCBS covers a wide range of medical and non-medical services and supports to ensure long-term health, safety and the well-being of people and their needs.

In this episode, Courtney Burke and Adam Herbst discuss Medicaid waivers and explore New York’s HCBS waivers. They also focus on why HCBS is so important to people receiving these supports and services and how HCBS reduces unmet healthcare needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Adam shares key takeaways as Chair of the Master Plan on Aging in serving people with I/DD who are getting older.
