About the Project

Through a grant from the US Department of Labor’s National Expansion of Employment Opportunities Network (NEON) project, the NY Alliance invites you to participate in a series of 5 webinars taking place in August 2023, designed to inspire and inform you about employment for people with disabilities. New Yorkers with disabilities continue to struggle to access sustainable and lucrative employment opportunities within their communities.

This series of webinars was developed to share insights from other States about their employment successes and challenges; offer tools and resources for training employment services staff in your organization and ways to transform agency culture to better emphasize the importance of employment goals for individuals with disabilities.

About the Webinars

Subject Matter Experts Tricia Jones Parkin, Program Manager, Utah State University Institute for Disability Research, Policy & Practice and Sue Killam, M.Ed., CWIC, CESP, Director, Transition, Employment & Careers; LSU Health - Human Development Center will examine the issues that impact people with disabilities in their quest for successful employment. The webinars will be focused on the following:

Wednesday, August 23: Agency culture and practices can be transformed to create an emphasis on employment goals for individuals. This is an agency-wide journey. What are some of the challenges and benchmarks along this path?

Thursday, August 31: Employment First successes in other states: How have other states increased employment for individuals with disabilities? Washington State has successfully assisted 83% of its citizens with disabilities to attain their employment goals; Oregon has assisted 57%. What techniques did Washington and Oregon as well as other states use to accomplish this?

Three-Part Series - Thursday, August 10, 17 & 24: Increased employment successes can be achieved with interventions by well-trained staff. These webinars will look at:

  • the skills needed to provide good employment services;
  • orienting new staff;
  • providing ongoing training, mentoring and supervision;
  • creating effective staffing structures; and
  • developing a supportive culture that supports ongoing learning.

All of these will be recorded and the recordings will be posted below. These webinars are strongly recommended for leadership and employment staff and all agencies, both NY Alliance members and non-members are welcome to attend free of charge. To register for upcoming webinars, click here.
